Skirt & Dress Alterations overview

Whether it’s for work, fun, or a special occasion, a dress or skirt that doesn’t fit quite right is no good. We commonly see customers looking for alterations for formal gowns, bridesmaids/flower girl dresses, and other formal dresses. But you deserve to have your more frequently worn dresses and skirts to fit and feel amazing as well. Check out all the kinds of alterations we provide for dresses and skirts below.

Hemming

Dresses and skirts often need to be hemmed to be the right length. This can be as straightforward as a simple hem on a pencil skirt. Or on a gown or formal wear, hemming the item can involve working with multiple layers of fabric. Either way, we can get the job done!

Shorten the Sleeves

Each dress is different, so shortening the sleeves can look a of different ways. Whether they’re flowy and long, or puffed and short, we can shorten them to fit your arm length and desired look.

Bring Up the Shoulders

Bringing up the shoulders is a common alteration for petite women to help the dress fit a smaller frame. However, with dresses, there tends to be more layers of fabric with more hidden seams. This can increase the labor, but we are absolutely able to do it!

Reduce Sleeve Bagginess

If the sleeves on a dress are too baggy, often we can remove some of the excess fabric. There is such a wide variety of different sleeves on women’s dresses, so please schedule a consultation and we will see how we can help.

Shorten Straps

Shortening the straps on a dress can bring up the neckline so it fits more modestly or comfortably. Dresses with straps are generally made long because while the can be shortened, consumers can’t add length to them, so this is a common alteration.

Tailor the Bodice

Similar to bringing in the torso of a top, tailoring the bodice means making adjustments to the top section of a dress, from the waist up. We can make adjustments to the shoulder area, through the bust, along the sides, and throughout the torso, depending on the dress.

Tailor the Waist

Tailoring the waist on a skirt is a lot like tailoring the waist on a pair of pants, although there just may be more layers of fabric. For a dress, sometimes tailoring the waist goes along with tailoring the torso. We can put a dart in to bring fabric in at the waist, and there are many other ways we can take it in, it just depends on the way the dress is made.

Tailor the Hips & Thighs

For a mermaid style dress or another style of form-fitting dress, a tight fit in the hips and thighs is a must. We can bring in the fabric along the seams to make it tight in just the right places. We can also make sure it’s form-fitting around the bottom. Other shops might tell you they won’t do that, but at Superior Tailoring and Alterations, we do!

Tailor the Back & Sides

The back of a dress can be one of the most stunning parts of a dress. But if it’s gapping in the wrong places, it’s not going to work. We can bring in the back so it hugs the natural curve of your spine, and we can also do this by bringing in the sides.

Boost Your Bust Line

Boost your bust line is an exciting and in-demand way, created by Superiors Tailoring and Alterations, of adding a bra to the inside of a dress so that you feel supported, gain cleavage, and don’t have to worry about bra straps peeking out or have any stress from going braless. We sew cups into the dress if it doesn’t have them already, and then add a very comfortable piece of elastic, connected by hooks you can fast to get the boost and support you need.

Quilt Restoration

Karen Borillo

Rachel listened to me and finished an heirloom that I will cherish the rest of my life. I had part of a quilt that my great-great-grandmother had started for me as a baby. She died before it was finished. I have kept the quilted squares for years. I was always afraid to ruin it but Rachel took it and added her love on this project and as I said it will be a family heirloom that I can pass down to my daughter and so on. Thank you!

Women's Dress Alteration

Ana Hernandez

Rachel helped me save a floor-length dress I needed to have fixed. After taking it to a different seamstress, my floor-length dress was returned with a botched hemline that was 3 inches shorter in a large area in the back of the dress. When I needed to have the dress fixed with only 2 days before my event, I found Rachel online and called her. She was genuinely concerned and wanted to help. She saw me at 8 pm that same night and had my dress back to me two days later with a professional and beautiful hem! If you need someone to trust with your dress, take it to Rachel!
